About the Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) Program
The eTA program came about as an attempt by the Canadian government to pre-screen travelers coming from visa-exempt countries. Before the eTA program was in effect, a traveler arriving in Canada who did not meet entry requirements would not be allowed in to the country. Then followed the task of returning that person to his or her country.
